What Is a Clinical Trial — and Should You Consider One?

A clinical trial is a research study that tests whether a new treatment, drug, device, or approach works and is safe. Trials are run at hospitals, research centers, and universities — and they are closely regulated by the FDA and independent ethics boards.

For patients with serious or complex diagnoses, trials can provide access to treatments that are not yet available through standard care. In some cases, a clinical trial is the most advanced treatment option available — anywhere.

Participation is always voluntary, always reversible, and always free to the patient for the trial itself. Your only potential cost is getting there — and that’s what S1M is here to help with.

“Will this interfere with my current treatment?”

“What if I don’t understand the consent form?”

You are entitled to ask questions until you fully understand. Research teams are required to explain everything in plain language, and you can take the form home to review before signing. Never feel rushed.

“Are trials only for people who’ve run out of options?”
