source1medicine Founders’ Opinion

Can We Prioritize the Following Three Unmet Needs?

Easy access to clinical trials has, for the most part, never been easy. The myriad trials available are ironically juxtaposed with difficulties in patient recruitment and enrollment, much less general knowledge in the medical community those trials even exist. Compound these facts with an arcane search engine from the FDA’s trials finder website and an almost behemoth effort to navigate it, the lack of one, stand-alone repository of navigable clinical trials information becomes grossly apparent.

Clinical trials instill hope. They can irrefutably alter a patient’s outlook toward the progression and survivability of a disease. Such positivity and hope have been clinically demonstrated to increase survival and or mitigate disease severity.

source1medicine’s founder’s family member, diagnosed with colorectal and ovarian cancers, was prescribed a FOLFOX regimen that ultimately was upgraded to a modified version. Another founder’s brother, post-classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) remission, ultimately succumbed to NSCLC. In neither case could the clinicians identify trials germane to their patient’s diseases much less make the effort. Why? Because such information takes time to find, to sort through the overwhelming onslaught of sources, to take note of word-of-mouth from a colleague, or to remember to jot down the trial’s name from some other caregiver. Who has the time?

s1m takes these issues seriously. As cancer care providers, cancer survivors, clinicians, and medical sciences communications experts, we collaborated on not just one unmet need but an overarching three. All three present glaringly obvious challenges that now, herein, have interesting solutions.
